During my time as a special education teacher, I had a student with autism who required various accommodations to succeed in the classroom. One particular instance stands out in my mind when I had to advocate for him and ensure his needs were met. He was struggling with sensory overload in the regular classroom environment, so I worked closely with the school administration to create a sensory-friendly space for him to retreat to when necessary. I also collaborated with his parents and the special education team to develop a personalized visual schedule that helped him better navigate his daily routines. With these accommodations in place, the student was able to thrive academically and socially, and his overall engagement in the classroom significantly improved.
