Tell us about a time when you had to adapt your research methods or protocols due to unexpected circumstances.

During my previous research position, we were conducting a study on a specific virus, and we had established a set of protocols and methods to follow. However, during the course of the study, we encountered unexpected contamination in our samples. This required us to quickly adapt our research methods and protocols in order to address the issue. We collaborated with our molecular biology team to develop new protocols for sample processing and decontamination procedures. Additionally, we implemented stricter aseptic techniques and used new reagents to prevent further contamination. These adjustments allowed us to continue our research and obtain reliable and accurate results.

In my previous role as a Virology Research Scientist, I encountered a situation where we were studying the effect of a potential antiviral compound on a specific virus. However, during the course of the experiment, we discovered that the virus strain we were using had mutated, rendering the antiviral compound ineffective. This unexpected circumstance required us to adapt our research methods and protocols. To address this challenge, I collaborated with the research team to conduct a thorough literature review and identify alternative virus strains that were unaffected by the mutations. We modified our experimental design accordingly and obtained new virus strains from a collaborating lab.
