Tell me about a time when you had to handle a situation where a marine mammal required specialized navigation or migration training.

I had the opportunity to handle a situation where a dolphin required specialized navigation training. It was during my time working at an aquarium as a marine mammal trainer. One of our dolphins, named Luna, had to be relocated to a different exhibit due to maintenance work. However, Luna was not familiar with the new exhibit and we needed to train her to navigate through the area safely. We started by introducing Luna to the new exhibit gradually, allowing her to explore and get comfortable with each section. We used positive reinforcement techniques, such as rewarding her with fish treats and verbal praise, to encourage her to swim in the desired direction. Over time, Luna became more confident and skilled at navigating through the exhibit. It was rewarding to see her adapt to the new environment and successfully maneuver through the different areas of the exhibit.

During my time as a marine mammal trainer at an aquarium, I encountered a situation where a sea lion needed specialized migration training. We were preparing to transfer a sea lion named Max to another facility for breeding purposes. However, Max had never been on a transport vessel before and needed to learn how to navigate through the unfamiliar environment. We started by introducing Max to a small, simulated transport crate on land, rewarding him with fish treats and praise each time he entered it voluntarily.
