Summary of the Role
The Marine Mammal Trainer is responsible for the care, training, and public presentation of marine mammals, including but not limited to dolphins, sea lions, and seals. This position requires a strong passion for marine life, a deep understanding of animal behavior, and an eagerness to engage with both animals and the public in an educational capacity.
Required Skills
Basic knowledge of marine mammal behavior and training techniques.
Strong observational skills to note changes in animal behavior or health.
Public speaking skills for educational presentations.
Physical fitness to handle the demands of regular in-water activities.
Patience and persistence in training and interacting with marine mammals.
Ability to learn and adapt to new training methods and protocols.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Marine Biology, Animal Science, Psychology, or a related field.
Previous experience working with animals, preferably in a zoo, aquarium, or marine park setting.
Strong swimming skills and comfort in the water.
CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
Ability to follow instructions and work well in a team environment.
Good communication skills for interacting with the public.
Responsibilities
Assist in the daily care and feeding of marine mammals.
Participate in the behavior training sessions under the supervision of senior trainers.
Engage with guests, conduct educational talks, and participate in public demonstrations.
Monitor the health and well-being of the animals and report any concerns to the veterinary staff.
Keep records of animal behavior and training progress.
Assist in the maintenance and cleaning of animal habitats and training equipment.
Collaborate with the training team to develop enrichment activities for the marine mammals.
Comply with all safety protocols and animal welfare guidelines.
