Tell us about a time when your ability to work independently was tested. How did you handle it?

There was this one time when I had a surveying project in an isolated rural area. It was tough due to the harsh weather, remote location, and lack of immediate support. I had to work independently most of the time, using my GPS and software to measure the field and mark the boundaries. I ensured I double-checked all my calculations and measurements to avoid any inaccuracies. I faced a couple of issues handling the GPS due to the technical glitches, but I troubleshooted them myself and also managed to complete the survey within the deadline.

There was a challenging project where I was tasked to survey a rural construction site. The location was remote with limited logistics and virtually no immediate help around. My responsibility included marking the boundaries precisely which required accurate mathematical calculations. The weather too became a challenge, adding up more complexity. Amongst these hurdles, I had to effectively use the GPS system and surveying software. There was an instance where I noticed inconsistent readings on my GPS. Connecting this with my problem-solving skills, I recalibrated the GPS, checked for discrepancies, and managed to troubleshoot it myself. Such instances also tested my time management skills, as I was working against a critical deadline. Despite these challenges, I completed the job on time, ensuring I double-checked all data, thereby maintaining the precision in my work.

On a previous project, I was asked to survey a large, rural construction site. The area was devoid of support infrastructure and assistance was miles away. Notwithstanding, I was responsible for providing accurate boundary markings for future developments, which required me to apply my knowledge of geometry and trigonometry. The task was made more daunting by the weather, which fluctuated between searing heat and heavy rains. One day, the GPS system showed inconsistent readings. Instead of getting flustered, I used my analytical skills to find the root cause of the issue. I deduced it could be the heavy atmospheric distortion thanks to the harsh weather. I adjusted the GPS settings for higher atmospheric noise, re-calibrated it, and voila, it worked! In these isolated terrains, I had to be meticulous with every measurement, verify every piece of data lest a mistake goes unnoticed and cause colossal miscalculations later. All this while, I kept the construction managers updated regularly about the progress and any red flags that might delay the completion. Despite the challenges and up against the ticking clock, I managed to complete the task on time with pin-point accuracy. To me, the project was an acid test of my abilities to work and problem-solve autonomously, one which I'm proud to say I passed successfully.
