Summary of the Role
The Zookeeper is responsible for the daily care, feeding, and maintenance of the zoo's animals. This position requires an individual with a passion for wildlife conservation and the skill to ensure the health and well-being of the animals under their supervision. The ideal candidate will have experience in animal husbandry, knowledge of behavioral enrichment techniques, and the ability to work as part of a team dedicated to providing the highest standard of animal care.
Required Skills
Animal husbandry and handling techniques.
Familiarity with the operation of various types of animal habitat maintenance equipment.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Problem-solving and critical thinking.
First Aid and CPR Certification desired.
Understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to zoo work.
Qualifications
Minimum of 2 years of experience as a zookeeper or in a related animal care field.
Associate's or bachelor's degree in zoology, biology, animal science, or a related field is preferred.
Knowledge of species-specific dietary requirements, behavioral traits, and habitat needs.
Physical ability to perform strenuous tasks, including lifting, carrying and bending, under various weather conditions.
Availability to work weekends, holidays, and after-hours as needed for emergencies or special events.
Strong observational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
Valid driver's license and ability to operate zoo vehicles.
Responsibilities
Provide daily care and feeding for a variety of zoo animals.
Conduct regular health checks and report any signs of illness or distress to the veterinarian.
Maintain clean and secure animal habitats.
Participate in behavioral and environmental enrichment activities to enhance animal welfare.
Educate the public about animals and conservation efforts through demonstrations and talks.
Assist in the handling and restraint of animals for medical procedures, transfers, or introductions.
Collaborate with other zoo staff to develop and implement animal management plans.
Keep accurate records of animal diets, health, and behaviors.
Contribute to the zoo's conservation and research projects.
Ensure compliance with zoo policies, safety protocols, and animal welfare laws.
