Summary of the Role
As the Chief Mate, also known as the Chief Officer or First Mate, you will hold the second-in-command position on a merchant vessel. Your primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and security of the cargo, crew, and the vessel itself. You will oversee deck operations, maintain the ship's equipment, and act as the master's representative in implementing the ship's safety and environmental policies.

Qualifications
A degree in nautical science or a related maritime field.
Valid Chief Mate's license and endorsements as required by international maritime regulations.
STCW certification and in-depth knowledge of SOLAS, MARPOL, and other maritime safety standards.
Extensive experience on merchant vessels with a proven track record in a leadership role.
Strong knowledge of cargo handling and stowage principles.
Firsthand experience with navigation and bridge equipment.
Excellent communication and leadership skills.
Ability to make decisions under pressure and handle multiple tasks.
Responsibilities
Oversee the loading, stowing, securing, and unloading of cargoes to ensure safety and prevent damage.
Manage and supervise the work of the deck crew, including training and conducting drills.
Assist the captain with navigation and pilotage; assume command in the master's absence.
Manage ship documentation and ensure compliance with maritime laws and regulations.
Inspect and maintain deck equipment, the hull, and superstructure to ensure the seaworthiness of the ship.
Coordinate with the engine department to ensure proper functioning of propulsion and other systems.
Plan and implement emergency procedures; lead response efforts during emergencies.
Collaborate with customs and immigration officials during port calls.
