Summary of the Role
A senior urban sustainability planner is responsible for developing strategic plans and policies that guide cities towards sustainable development and environmental stewardship. They collaborate with policymakers, urban designers, community groups, and other stakeholders to implement practices that promote environmental health, social equity, and economic vitality.

Qualifications

Excellent understanding of environmental regulations and legislation.
Experience working with GIS, statistical analysis software, and other relevant planning tools.
Strong project management skills, including budgeting and grant writing.
Effective communication skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
Membership or certification from a recognized planning or sustainability institution such as the AICP or LEED AP.
Responsibilities
Assessing and analyzing current urban environments to identify areas for sustainable improvements.
Developing, proposing, and implementing policies and plans to promote sustainable development in urban areas.
Working with government officials, community members, and industry professionals to incorporate sustainability considerations into land use, transportation, resource management, and infrastructure projects.
Monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of sustainability programs and initiatives.
Providing expert advice on sustainability issues to city planners and other stakeholders.
Staying up to date with advancements in sustainability, urban planning, and environmental legislation to ensure best practices are followed.
Coordinating with other departments and organizations to facilitate interdisciplinary approaches to urban sustainability.
Securing funding for sustainability projects through grants, public-private partnerships, and other financial instruments.
Delivering presentations and reports to city councils, planning commissions, and the public on sustainability projects and progress.
Leading and mentoring junior staff and interns in best practices for urban sustainability planning.
