Summary of the Role
The Chemical Safety Officer (CSO) is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of comprehensive chemical safety and environmental compliance programs within the organization. The CSO will oversee the safe storage, use, and disposal of hazardous chemicals, ensuring adherence to all relevant local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines. This role requires a highly experienced individual with extensive knowledge in chemical handling, safety procedures, and risk management.

Certification from a recognized body in chemical safety or hazardous materials management (e.g., Certified Hazardous Materials Manager - CHMM).
In-depth understanding of federal, state, and local chemical safety regulations, including OSHA and EPA standards.
Experience in developing and executing safety training programs for employees.
Familiarity with emergency response procedures and equipment for chemical spills or incidents.
Responsibilities
Develop and maintain the organization's chemical hygiene plan and hazardous waste management program.
Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments in laboratories and other areas where chemicals are used or stored.
Provide training and guidance to staff on chemical safety procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE) usage.
Investigate chemical incidents and near-misses, recommending corrective actions to prevent future occurrences.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of chemical safety regulations and best practices to ensure compliance.
Collaborate with emergency response teams to plan and conduct emergency drills involving chemical spills or exposures.
Advise on the purchase and approval of new chemicals and equipment from a safety perspective.
Liaise with regulatory agencies and internal stakeholders to address any chemical safety concerns.
Coordinate the proper labeling, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemicals according to regulations.
Monitor environmental metrics and implement measures to reduce the organization's chemical footprint.
